Give sailing a go - 2016

Yacht and dinghy sailing courses for adults

Have you ever fancied trying your hand at sailing? Here’s the perfect way to dip your toe in the waters – metaphorically speaking of course. Mayo Sailing Club have announced two different short courses for adults, introducing them to some of the skills involved in this exciting sport.

These courses are for people aged 18 and over. Junior Sailing Courses also take place during the summer months and are exclusively on dinghies. Clew Bay has some of the most attractive sailing waters in the country and sailing gives a totally different perspective from the ‘landlubber’ one.

Give sailing a go - Yacht / Cruiser sailing

This four night course is for adults with little or no sailing experience. It begins on dry land and moves onto the sea as the course progresses. In the first session, participants get introduced to a yacht tied up at the pontoon where the layout of a boat and principles of sailing are explained.

From the second session the training is hands on and will take place on board a racing yacht with an experienced skipper and crew. There will be a short instructional talk at the beginning of each hands on session, then sailing and finally a wrap-up over a warm cup of tea in the clubhouse afterwards.

If you have a life jacket, you should bring it on the first night as you will be getting on board a boat. You will need waterproof gear for sessions 2, 3 and 4, but details of this will be fully explained during Session 1.

The dates are

  • Tuesday 17th May at 6.30pm
  • Thursday 19th May at 6.30pm
  • Thursday 26th May at 6.30pm
  • Thursday 2nd June at 6.30pm

The cost is €150 which includes club membership for the season.

Advance booking is essential ( or phone Blair 087-9977008).

Give sailing a go - Dinghy sailing

Dinghies are smaller sailing boats and are usually single or double-handed. This weekend course is for adults who have never sailed before and also for those who have crewed on larger boats and who now wish to deepen their understanding of sailing and try helming themselves.

It will begin on dry land, introducing participants to a dinghy, the different parts of it, and the principles of sailing. There’s no substitute for actually getting on the water and everyone will get actual sailing experience as soon as possible.

At first this will be in very sheltered water, close to land. Day two will take place almost entirely on the water. The sailing instructor is fully qualified and experienced. Full safety cover will also be provided including club boats on the water to give ongoing support and any necessary assistance.

The dinghy sailing course for adults takes place on the weekend of

  • Saturday 28th May
  • Sunday 29th May

The cost is €99 for Mayo Sailing Club members and €150 for non members. This includes the provision of a dinghy for both days.

A wetsuit and buoyancy aid will be required – the Club has a limited number of buoyancy aids which will be made available.

Advance booking is essential ( or phone Blair 087-9977008).
